I first became aware of Stephen Budiansky in the days of the History Channel.   He was a color commentator in the productions about air power history.  I wrote down his name and found this book by him not at the library but where I had to buy it.  It was well worth the effort, expense and is a lasting standout gem in my library.
The beginning of flight was covered in detail.  The Wright brothers were careful researchers in a day where the newspaper was almost a primary source for facts.  The United States Mail was a means to obtain information.  It was awkwardly slow work by today’s standards.
The Wright brothers owned a shop in Dayton, Ohio where they built and sold bicycles.  In doing so, they had at hand the tools needed to build kites and later the fliers.  They had more time to work on their hobby, flying,  in the cold months when people then as now seldom ride their bicycles.  They could experiment and read to enlighten themselves.  They used bicycle spokes, hacksaw blades and other “at hand” things to build their wind tunnels where they researched the optimum air foils for the wings of the kites and the flier which followed.
As time progressed, they needed a good location, with a steady wind and no obstructions at which to test the kite.  They wrote to the US weather service which recommended Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.  They went in December when they could be away from the shop.  In those days there were not busses as we know them. There might have been a train, or stage coach upon which they travelled.  It took several days each way.  They tried their constructed kite and returned to Dayton.
The brothers, Orville and Wilber, lived at the time in history when people were interested in learning to fly.  The brothers got ahead of others in the effort.  Budiansky names their competitors and describes their efforts.  One German, Otto Lilienthal, had made some 2,000 successful glides.  In August 9, 1896 when his glider stalled and plummeted 50 feet to the ground fracturing his spine.  He died the next day.
The brothers did some ground breaking things, no pun intended, which put them far ahead of others.  They could control their craft in the three axis, roll, yaw and pitch.  They designed the propeller as a wing in rotation rather than as rotating paddles.  Their invention holds up well to today’s standards of efficiency for a propeller.  They could not find an engine light enough to power their plane so they built one.  They obtained the control of roll by deforming the wing slightly which was an empty rectangular construction.  They controlled yaw with a vertical stabilizer and pitch with the horizontal stabilizer.
Finally, the flier flew under power on Dec. 17, 1903 and was piloted by Orville.  The brothers offered the plane to the AAF for $100,000.  They tried to sell it several other times, each to no avail, and then stored it away while the rest of the world was catching up.  In 1909 the US Army bought the “Wright Military” flier for $30,000.  It would accommodate two passengers seated side by side instead of one prone.

"A superbly researched and groundbreaking account of Soviet espionage in the thirties"  The Daily Telegraph.



This is worth your attention.  We are more security conscious these days.  The Soviets found themselves behind the curve as WWII loomed on the horizon in the Thirties.  They needed single wing, speedy, maneuverable fighters and large bombers but did not have the where-with-all to create or develop them.



The solution was to enroll their bright students in The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston to learn engineering and English in order to steal plans and ideas for their country men.  They attended MIT and other institutions of learning, and achieved employment in the US aircraft industry where they could complete their assignments.  They obtained guided tours at the major factories, bought aircraft, reversed engineered the aircraft so that they could build them for themselves. They even shipped the espionage materials to Moscow in aircraft purchased from US companies.  



When rumors of the THE BOMB being developed came out in the thirties, some of their people got jobs in the Manhattan project and shipped home the information.  This particular espionage hastened the Cold War in the 50's.



Ms. Lokova names places and people and specifics with documentation.  Who was the spy who changed history.  It was Stanislav Shumovsky who went to MIT and was instrumental is bringing others there.  He worked with the CPUSA, (Communist Party USA)  He gave much leadership and direction to the whole process.  I recognized at least one name (Fuchs) of whom I was aware as a spy in the Manhattan Project.

Murdochite

Wikipedia:  "PbCu6O8−x(Cl,Br)2x(x ≤ 0.5),  It was first discovered in 1953 in the Mammoth-Saint Anthony Mine in Pinal County, Arizona by Percy W. Porter, a mining engineer who handpicked a 401.5-mg sample.  Porter would later submit for analysis and it was then that Fred A. Hildebrand suggested that the sample was a new mineral after taking a powder x-ray picture.

It was named for Joseph Murdoch (1890–1973), American mineralogist.  Murdochite was first suggested to be of a cubic structure. After this suggestion, the term “murdochite-type structure” began to be used when describing a structure that is similar to that of murdochite.  Murdochite was later found to be octahedral.  The mineral murdochite is named after Joseph Murdoch, who was once a professor of geology at the University of California, Los Angeles and a past president of the Mineralogical Society of America."

Our Sample comes from Hansonburg Mine District, Socarro, County, New Mexico, USA.  The Field of View in both the above is .73mm.

In Defense of "Water Droplet." Why was it rejected?

I'm cleaning out my workshop in the basement in an on going fashion.  I came across this one framed in a lovely "glitzy" frame.

I find myself struggling to understand, "What is wrong with this work?"  It couldn't have been the price.  I asked just $46.80 for it.  I was and still am in love with it.  When I look at it I see a spot in the off center lower left.  I see a light green simple curve moving backward into the the image and I see a background with a fade right to left of a bluish green color.  I see turquoise in there.
 
I finally come back to the spot and look closer.  I see an image in it.  The landscape is upside down in it.  I see the sky and the grass.  I had to use my loop to see the diagonal portion of it.  It was shot on 7-18-11 at Gorman Nature Center. 

It is worth at least a third look and maybe more.  What is wrong with that?  Are pictures on the wall to catch our interest and more importantly our minds?

This one was shot two days later and has a Field of View of 7.25mm.  It is 3.08x on the sensor.  I like this one better cause the droplet shows the blue sky and greeen grass.  I shows also the sun too.  I like the top one better because of the pleasing overall color.

The water droplet above could have been available to man maybe 2000 years ago.  All that was needed was an open wondering mind, observation and experimentation.

Uses for Platinum

You may remember our discussion of Platinum.  We are down to practical matters now and discussing its uses.  According to Google, "The most important use of platinum is in the catalytic converters in our vehicles which facilitates the complete combustion of unburned hydrocarbons."
