Ulexite From California

Also known as TV rock,  Ulexite has unusual optical properties.  I it a fibrous rock.

If it is cut vertically to the fibers and polished, You can observe these properties.

I bought this sample at a show.

The fibers make this image appear blurred but it is sharply focused.

Its chemical formula is (NaCaB₅O₆(OH)₆·5H₂O) (hydrated sodium calcium borate hydroxide) according to Wikipedia.

Scarlet Elf Cup

I was pleased to find these little mushrooms down by the on ramp to bridge 6-7.  They are small and require a sharp eye to see them.

According to Wikipedia, the Oneida and possibly the Iroquois Indians ground the dried fruiting bodies and use the powder as a styptic, a substance to stop bleeding.

I have come to enjoy sitting by a vernal pool watching the action.  I saw water striders one warm day.  We were both enjoying the sun.

Can you see how they stand on the surface tension of the water?  They have the nickname:  Jesus Bug.

I fear the mosquitoes will be multitudinous this season.  They tend to drive me from the forest.  I like staying in the sun where they are less comfortable.  But then, so am I in the hot weather.

This snail is "walking" on the underneath of the water's surface tension.  March 27, 2016 was a warm morning and I could observe them as I sat by the vernal pool.

Tracked Loader

Gehl CTL85 Loader

This loader is, no doubt, more stable than the four wheel bobcat loader I saw him use last year.  The bobcat was rocking when carrying a bale.  I don't think this one rocks as much or at all.
