Flint

Flint
I believe I read that we aren't clear about the formation of flint.  This one looks like there may have been a crystal around which it formed.  It has quartz on the other side.

Flint with Quartz
I find it interesting to speculate how this one was formed.

Panographic Image

Fossilized Wood
I decided that a lower angle would show the "woodiness" of it better.

Fossilized Wood
You will note the quartz at the bottom.  Somewhere, I read that quartz is a large factor in the process.  Its contaminants tend to color the petrified wood.  I think the color in this case is natural without contaminants.

Petrified Wood

Petrification is the process by which organic material is converted into a fossil through the replacement of the original material and the filling of the original pore spaces with minerals.
Wikipedia

I obtained three pieces of petrified wood from vendors at Richland Lithic and Lapidary Society events.  Two of the three didn't look like wood to me.  I wanted to show images that looked like wood.  One of the pieces, shown here, is about 1.25 (1 1/4) inches long and about .625 (5/8) inches in diameter.

Petrified Wood
This one looked like wood to me but it is definitely rock.

Petrification takes place through a combination of two similar processes: permineralization and replacement.  These processes create replicas of the original specimen that are similar down to the microscopic level, and require a minimum of about 10,000 years to take place.

By visual inspection, I can accept this as having been wood at one time.  Note the layer of quartz at the bottom.

Peacock Ore

Peacock Ore
I had not made this one when I showed you the 8x closeups recently.  I think it helps to have seen this type shot before the close up but alas, not this time.  You can view the other shots here.  I hope you enjoy.
