Common Wood-nymph

Common Wood-nymph
It was a cool morning and this butterfly was warming itself in the sun.  I had just begun my approach when an exercise enthusiast ran past me on the trail.  The butterfly was gone when I looked back for it.

Iridescence

Ebony Jewelwing Male
This was my first shot of this insect the other morning.  I had not switched on the flash.  I noticed something about the blue color of the insect.  Without the flash the blue, iridescent blue, shows up much better.  It is a quality of the light.

The flash, coming from the wrong direction to show the iridescence, washes out the blue.  A closer look shows a like of the blue running down the abdomen.

Birds, in particular I am thinking of the Tree Swallow, have feathers which appear blue.  They are not blue they are iridescent.  Like a rainbow or light shining through a prism, they break the light and show blue as in this case.

Birdhouse Grass Rattlesnake Master

Birdhouse Grass Rattlesnake Master
I finally got around to shooting this with a tripod.  I demonstrated the textural contrast in the foreground, the two birdhouses, etc.

The light was changing that morning so exposures were a little tricky.  I used Helicon Focus for deep DOF.  I did not get the trail included.

Common Whitetail

Common Whitetail
I have so many images of dragonflies that I will probably be unable to show them all.  I still want more and hope the weather will moderate soon.

Blue Dasher

Blue Dasher Male
I think this species to be quite photogenic.  It is probably the color.  They are tame and will land at the same location time after time.  All you must do is wait.

Bird House Grass

Bird House Grass
I captured this image with the wrong lens.

I liked the texture of the grass along the trail.  I thought it might be in contrast to the more prickly texture of the Rattlesnake Master plants behind it.  I think that I can execute this shot much better if I use a tripod and a wider lens.  I think that more of the trail to the right needs to be shown.

Brush-legged Wolf Spider

Brush-legged Wolf Spider
For my spider lovers, I captured this little guy sitting on a lily pad.  I tried to make him look good by cleaning up the "dust" on the leaf.
