Slaty Skimmer

Slaty Skimmer
Slaty Skimmers like to perch on the pickerel weed for sun or to watch for the next meal.  Either way, I like the colors.

Slaty Skimmer
I might like one of these on my wall.

Twelve-spotted Skimmer

Twelve-spotted Skimmer
I am seeing more and more of this dragonfly as the season progresses.  I made this capture at the vernal pool South of the Covered Bridge.  It seemed to like the little perch placed there for it.

This is a male.  I have yet to photograph a female this season.

Deleware Skipper

Deleware Skipper
I have read that we have 35 species of skippers in Ohio.  This obviously is one.  Some must be dissected to to confirm their ID.  That is beyond the scope of my operation.  They are tiny butterflies as you can see in the shot of a Deleware Skipper on a common milkweed blossom.  I, like the butterfly, am drawn to the blossoms but for different reasons.

Bumble Bees Like Pickerel Weed

Bumble Bee, Pickerel Weed
Bumble Bees like Pickerel Weed as much as other bees do.  They fly around my head, too close to photograph, if I sit near the blossom.  This one was just the right distance.

Slender Spreadwing

Slender Spreadwing
I can see these if they move as I am walking by.  My friend, Terry, pointed this one out to me.  I learned that one way to identify this damselfly in the field is light outer perimeter at the wingtips.  I have photographed this species near the vernal pool North of the Covered Bridge but never in this location, just West of the Frog-pond, along a trail.

Grasshopper Nymph

Grasshopper Nymph
I saw this little guy on a leaf the other morning.  I was pretty sure that it was a grasshopper at the time but later, at the computer, I noticed the tiny undeveloped wings above the second legs.  It could hop strongly but not fly.

Airport Day at Mansfield Lahm

Lockheed C-130H Hercules
The C-27J's are gone and The 179th again has Lockheed C-130H Hercules transports.  We were privileged to see the C-130 this year.  The prototype first flew in 1954.  The plane is still in service and projected for service well into the future.

Lockheed C-130H Hercules
I was going with my Grandsons, Lucas and Loudon this year, but they cancelled out at the last minute to go see Grandma Nancy.

Grumman 3E TBM Avenger
This beautifully restored Grumman 3E TBM Avenger was at the show this year.  Being a Navy plane, I have had little occasion to learn about it.  I have seen it on TV.  I read that there were 9839 manufactured by Grumman, General Motors.  Some were fighters and some like this one were torpedo bombers.  They entered service in 1942 and remained in service until 1960.  It was used by not only our navy and marines but by:

It was the second largest, after the C-130, aircraft at the show.
