Bloodroot

Bloodroot
Bloodroot has come and gone for this year.  It is ephemeral
in that the bloom only lasts one day.  I was extremely lucky to catch this one with petals open like this.  It was and is always a portent of spring.

Dandelion

Dandelion Seeds
They wouldn't fly far in this wet condition.  It is great fun for children, myself included, to blow them and watch them fly.

We are close to seeing them like this.  We mow so much that they seldom get this far in their growth.

Corn Planting Is Near

Case IH 9330 Tractor

Most of this work was done last fall.  This tractor is a 240 hp tractor which is good for pulling heavy discs and chisel plows.

Case IH Chisel Plow
I think this implement is used before planting corn.  Gets the year's detritus into the soil so that it can rot over the winter.

Case IH True-tandem 330 Turbo Disc
This implement is possibly used before sowing beans.

Keith's corn planter and grain drill are both no-till rated so tilling is not absolutely needed ahead of them.  My father had a wheel disc but no chisel plow.  I drove the disc ahead of the planter.  Things are different today.  That tractor looks like a "hummer" to me.  I am sure I would have liked to drive it.  The only thing missing for me is the Persian orange paint.

Mallard Pair

Mallard Female
This pair was on the pond the morning I arrived.  They had friends who immediately flew off.  The drake swam over to the edge on the south side.  Mean time I was moving to get between them and the sun.

Mallard Drake
She swam toward the center of the pond with him behind.  The female looked larger to me.  I soon found the limit of their comfortablity and they flew off together.  I did not look for the nest but I think that I could have found it if I tried.
