Lens Setup




Lens Setup
From top to bottom the components are:  1.4X tele converter, total 68mm extension, Sigma 105mm macro lens, 62mm to 58mm step down ring, 58mm to 49mm reversing ring, and finally Mamyia 50mm.  This setup yields 3.6X on the sensor, with a FOV (field-of-view) of 6.6 mm.

I am growing to think this is my setup which yields maximum usable magnification, MUM.  See Ron Pellar's explanation of MUM.

This crystal is 3.6X on the sensor with a FOV of 6.6mm.  It was captured with the above setup.

This sample is from Francon Quarry, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  It is shown 4.55X with a FOV 4.67mm.

I saw a sample from the same mine on Mindat and to my uninitiated eye the straws are Dawsonite while the purple crystals are Fluorite.

The straws look so delicate.

Fluorite in its purest forms us used to make fine photographic lens.  It is used to make hydrofluoric acid.  It is also used as a flux for smelting.  Wikipedia

Mamyia 50mm

This is a late 70's era lens.  I bought it in 1979 during the summer.  It is a relatively fast lens, f/1.7.  It has a Mamyia mount on the other end and 49mm threads on this end.  I have reversing ring which mounts on the these threads and onto the 58mm threads on my 105mm.  FYI, a reversing ring has male threads on both ends.

The tape is there to keep the rings from rotating during handling.  The aperature is set on f/1.7 and focus is set on infinity.

Ilvaite

I saw the quartz crystals during  my first look at this specimen.  I am so uninitiated to mineral identification that I thought they were Ilvaite and just discovered, to the contrary that the black crystals on the left are Ilvaite.  I am afraid that this series of photographs was photographed displaying my erroneous idea.  My composition shows it.

 In this image it is in the upper left.

My mother could grow these plants in her kitchen and they were always beautiful.  I think one might say that she had a "green thumb."

Teleconverters

1.4X Teleconverter
These lens accessories are mounted on the camera with the lens mounted on them.  They multiply the focal length, in this case by 1.4.  So, a 100mm mounted on a 1.4x teleconverter would effectively be equivalent to a 140mm lens.  It reduces the light entering the camera by one stop, i.e., f/5.6 reduced to f/8.  My f/2.8 lens becomes an f/4 lens when mounted on this teleconverter.  You might need to up your ISO setting by a stop, eg, 400 to 800 to achieve the same exposure settings on the camera.  
2X Teleconverter
This teleconverter produces a stronger effect.  You multiply by 2 times the lens focal length, i.e.. a 100mm lens becomes a 200mm lens with this mounted.  The drawback is that you lose 2 stops of light.  You must raise your ISO 2 stops, eg. 400 to 1600.  My f/2.8 lens becomes an f/5.6 lens when mounted on a 2X teleconverter


I have come to the opinion that the 1.4X teleconverter is a good choice.  I loose only 1 stop requiring only one stop of ISO increase and reducing all the attending noise introduced.

I might add, that at mindat they seem to think my setup is too complicated.  I suppose the teleconverter would be one of the first things to go.  You can read the attending conversation at mindat.

This sample is from Alpine Texas and is shown at 3.3X and a FOV 7.14mm.
Heulandite was designated a series of minerals in 1997 by the International Mineralogical Association.  "Heulandite-Ca, the most common of these, is a(n) hydrous calcium and aluminium silicate, (Ca,Na)2-3Al3(Al,Si)2Si13O36·12H2O.", says Wikipedia.
Mindat comments that: There is some difficulty in distinguishing Heulandite from Clinoptilolite which we discussed recently.  I take that to mean that they are close in their properties.

I try to keep these flower pictures seasonal.  I photographed this Brugmansia arborea at Kingwood Greenhouse in November of 2007.

This capture was made difficult by the downward angle at which it grows.  When I saw "arborea" in its scientific name I wondered about it.  I just read at Wikipedia that it is a small tree which can grow up to 21'.

In the 10 years since the capture, I seem to have forgotten that it is strongly fragrant. 
I did remember the bloom to be large.

Wikipedia reports that the plant is native to the Andes mountains in Southern Columbia.

Canon Rebel XSI

I bought this camera about a year ago to use in micro photography.  I read that 12 megapixel
was the highest resolution camera one should use in micro photography.  To my knowledge, no one makes DSLRs in 12 megapixels.  This is a circa 2008 camera.  I prefer, however; using my subpro 7D and have not decided that it is worse than the XSI for this purpose.

Ronald J. Pellar at mindat has a good essay on this subject.  I can't understand the math he
presents and can't make the calculations required.  You might want to check out Ron's essay.

According to Wikipedia its primary existence world wide is located around the Aegean Sea.

I had trouble finding this at mindat.org.  I couldn't find it by searching Wickpedia.  I searched using Google on the web and found it.  It was first described in 1969, Owl Canyon, San Bernardino County, California.  Wikipedia

Red Fountain Grass

A.K.A. Crimson Fountain Grass, Red Fountain Grass is part of a larger group of grasses known as Ornamental Grasses.

This image comes from Kingwood Center in September of 2005.  The scientific name for this is Pennisetum setaceum.  Wickipedia 

I have admired ornamental grasses for years and Carol has grown to appreciate them also.  We have some lovely grass West of our garage.  I got the start from my son, Chad.  I think it is called Eulalia Grass.

Extension Tubes

Earlier I experienced vignetting when I added certain close-up filters.  I found that I must open my aperture to eliminate this problem.  With the strongest filters, I had to open to f/2.8, the lenses widest.

Later I discovered that the addition of extension tubes had an effect on this phenomena.  If I added enough extension, I could use smaller apertures.  Lately I have liked f/5.6 and experienced no vignetting until I was using a short focal length filter.  When it reared its ugly head I eliminated it with the addition of 20mm more of extension.  I recently purchased a second set  to explore whether more extension would benefit my photography.  To this time, I have not found that it will but I keep trying.

The above tubes total 68mm.  They have three parts, 12mm; 20mm; and 36mm.  They are placed between the camera and the lens.  They have the same mounts as used on your camera system.   If I use a teleconverter, which I will discuss at another time, I place it between the extenders and the camera.

Apatite

You may remember that I wanted to clean this specimen.  I soaked it in Oxalic Acid for over a week, not knowing how long it needed.  It came out looking pretty good.  I used my old toothbrush and tap water to remove the cleaning agent.

This sample it from Mount Apatite, Auburn, Maine.  It is displayed at 6.5X.  The field of view is 3.6mm

The strong acid somehow caused the cleavage to weaken and the two sides seperated.  I think the part on the right is still down in the acid.  I have meant to look for it but forgot to do so.

You may remember we said this mineral is the defining mineral for hardness 5 in the Mohs Scale of mineral hardness.  That's the middle one.
