Scoria is lava.  It has all the holes, vesicles, because it had much gas mixed in with the melted rock.

It is either andecitic or balsaltic, referring to the kind of melted rock from which it comes.

Emerald

Emerald is a gemstone and a variety of the mineral beryl (Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆) colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium.^[2] Beryl has a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale.  I understand the Wikipedia description thus far.  A diamond is 10 on the Mohs scale and so it is relatively hard.

I obtained this sample at a show.  It is not large.

The Gem is, of course, transparent, which is one of the criteria by which a gem is judged.  The purity here is not such that we could use it for jewelry.

Obviously, this sample is from South America.  Emerald is found throughout the world in many countries.

A closeup look is also interesting.  This sample is obviously not of gem quality and is therefore worth very little.  I, however; like looking at it.
