Copse Of Trees Bench

Copse Of Trees Bench
This bench is most refreshing after a hot walk in the summer.  There is plenty of wildlife activity in the copse of trees to keep your attention while resting.

Another use for it is anytime when my back and hips hurt and I need a rest.  I sometimes lay prone on it.  Carol worries that someone will see me but "I don't care,"  to quote Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive

Green Adventurine

Green Adventurine
I found this among my purchased samples.  It appears to have been run through a rock tumbler.

Green Adventurine was produced by the Fenton Art Glass Company in 1964 to 1968.  It is blue and/ or green frit over a milk glass base.  Frit is ground glass.
We visited the company while riding GOBA in 2001.  At the time of the visit I was mostly an uninitiated person in the concept of Volcanoes.  Volcanoes make glass.  Fenton makes glass.  They have taken it to a level of art.
A zoom into this image shows the fine granularity of the sample.  I am trying to remember that when molten rock cools quickly there is no time for the formation of large crystals.

More Scary Creatures

Banded Garden Spider
These spiders are harmless to people to the extent of my knowledge.  I used to find them or their cousin in the bushes in front of Grandma Eicher's porch when I was growing up.  There is no need to kill them.  They help balance the food chain.  If you are fortunate enough to be there when they catch an insect in their web, you will find the process of wrapping the victim into web restraints for later consumption interesting.

Halloween: Creepy Bug!!!

Wirligig Beetle
Halloween gives me an excuse to show a beetle I found in the pond recently.

Wirligig Beetles Swimming

I noticed they had good vision because they started to disperse as soon as my approach was about six feet.  They were very active.  (The Video is at the bottom.)

Wirligig Beetle
I suppose they evoke a thought of PacMan or a Bill Cosby character.  As you can see, they do some walking at which activity they are slow.  Conversely, they swim rapidly.

Wirligig Beetle
Their "feet" are really flippers.

I think they may be able to roll their eyes from top to bottom when they need to see in that direction.

Wirligig Beetle
I think you need to get a good look at the face to gain a sense of the creature.  This is where it gets creepy.  It has a face only a mother Wirligig Beetle could love,

Wirligig Beetle
Or maybe a mother fish.

The honey bees love it.
