Pickerel Weed

Pickeral Weed
I get to see these plants up close while I look to photograph dragon and damsel flies.  I learned there is a bee which comes just for this plant, the Dufourea novaeangliae.

Dufourea_novaeangliae
I have become captivated by the leaf's unique shape.

Pickeral Weed Leaf
It is an aquatic plant coming back each year from the root in the mud.  I saw a plant just yesterday with a similarly shaped leaf, though small.  Its blooms were entirely different.  I hope to share it with you soon.

Water Lily

Water Lily
Our pond looked like Monet's garden in June and early July.  We even had painters working plein air from the peninsula.  Many of the leaves were discolored as you can see but it seems each day brings newly open blooms.

Water Lily
It was near noon as you might notice shadows could be a problem.  I mitigated them with strong flash from the distance.  I liked the reflection in the dark blue water.

Puddle Party

Viceroy Butterfly
The viceroy likes to attend puddle parties.  This vernal pool was drying up in mid July but it was still quite muddy in the center.  The butterflies visit for salts which they sip like nectar from a flower.

Summer Azure
They have a long hollow tong which is like a straw.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Male
You can clearly see the probosces, tong, is this shot.

Adamite

Adamite
Adamite is a zinc arsenate hydroxide mineral, Zn2AsO4OH. It is a mineral that typically occurs in the oxidized or weathered zone above zinc ore occurrences. Pure adamite is colorless, but usually it possess yellow color due to Fe compounds admixture. Tints of green also occur and are connected with copper substitutions in the mineral structure.  Wikipedia

Adamite is a minor ore of zinc.  It may be in more demand as a collectors mineral

This sample came from Laurium Greece.

Adamite
It is another sample I purchased from Don Smoley,

I am pleased to own it.  I read that it has fluorescent properties, so we may take another look at it later.
