Brother's Birthday

Dr. Lowell C Eicher and Larry
Today, March 21, 2016 is Craig's birthday.  In honor of it, I went to visit him yesterday.  We went to the NMUSAF in Dayton.  I have been asking him for his picture wearing his Air Force uniform.  So far, we have been unable to find it.  We are afraid of trying to get him into his old uniform, still in the closet.  He tells me he was a Captain when he left the Air Force.  He served during the Vietnam War as an OD, aka Doctor of Optometry.  I bought him the hat for his birthday and he took us to see the movie.  It was on the big screen and contained wonderful photography which I enjoyed very much.

Happy Birthday, Craig

Celestite

Celestite
My first glance, that of the uninitiated, told me that the brown substance was Celestite, aka Celestine.  As I read about it, I came to realize that the blueishly striated and clear parts were Celestite.

It came as a mounted sample.

Celestite
In addition to being found in California and New York, I learned that it is also found in Ohio.  Celestine crystals are found in some geodes. The world's largest known geode, a celestine geode 35 feet (10.7 m) in diameter at its widest point, is located near the village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio, on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. The geode has been converted into a viewing cave, Crystal Cave, with the crystals which once composed the floor of the geode removed. The geode has celestine crystals as wide as 18 inches (46 cm) across, estimated to weigh up to 300 pounds (135 kg) each.  Wikipedia

It is soft, 3.5 Mohs scale.  It is a good source of strontium, commonly used in fireworks and metal alloys.
