New at Gorman Nature Center

Pet Waste Management Station
I noticed a couple new things at Gorman after a several week Hiatus.  This sight bought joy to my heart as stepping in "doggy dodos" is one of my pet peeves.  It looks to me like you just take a clean new bag as you enter the trail, pick up the dodo, and deposit it on the way out, no muss no fuss.

Bridge 3 Bench
This beautiful bench looks inviting to me.  It is in the shade and made of recycled products.  I find that I like to sit more than I used to.

American Goldfinch

American Goldfinch
These birds are feasting on the seeds of the Tall Sunflower as soon as they ripen.  We have way more of them than usual which makes me think they are migrating from the North.

American Goldfinch
They are very active, difficult to approach.

I watch their behavior and modify mine to afford the best opportunity to catch their image.

American Goldfinch
Another reason for me to believe they are migrating is that they have their autumn plumage.  The local Goldfinches haven't changed as yet.

Blue Dasher Dragonfly

Blue Dasher Dragonfly Male
As we pass into autumn, we will see fewer and fewer of these dragonflies.  This individual is probably a young male.

Blue Dasher Dragonfly Male
They are fun to photograph because they return to the same perch.  If you happen to position yourself close to their perch, you can get frame filling shots.

Pink Knotweed

Pink Knotweed
I seem to remember this plant growing in the barn yard in the fall.  My remembrance might be wrong but, none-the-less, its bloom is beautiful.

Silver_Spotted Skipper Butterfly

Silver-Spotted Skipper Butterfly
This nectar loving skipper is distinctive because of the silver colored mark underneath the hind-wings.  The spot is said to resemble the shape of the state Texas.

Silver-spotted Skipper

They seem quite common at Gorman, in fact, I read, they are common throughout the US.  In our area, they have two broods a season and over winter as chrysalids according to Wikipedia.  Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David L. Wagner lists larval foods as Cassia, False indigo, groundnut, locust, rose acacia, wisteria, and other legumes.

Keith Kisling Farm

Keith Kisling Farm

Keith is currently preparing his equipment for the corn and bean harvest.  It remains to be seen whether he will get a fourth cutting of hay.

I want to make an image which he might want to hang in his house.

Wrapping Hay

Wrapping Hay
The third cutting on the Kisling farm was extremely good, if no plentiful, Alfalfa.  Kieth decided to wrap it.  The wrapping causes the hay to ferment and the cows think it tastes wonderful.  None of this happened when I was on the farm so I was especially interested to learn about it.  I have prepared a video showing the process.
