Shadow Darner

Shadow Darner
This insect was flying repeatedly around the vernal pool and hovering, also repeatedly.

Shadow Darner
It, very cooperatively, posed, often, long enough for a shot.

Baling Hay, Round Bales

Round Baling
I think I mentioned previously that I was only aware of a small round baler in my days on the farm.  The, perhaps first and only, one at the time was made by Allis Chalmers.

Kieth uses a New Holland baler for both round and square bales.  It is a quick process though he must stop to eject a bale.  Being round, the bales can be dangerous for a person to be close to on un-level ground.  I have prepared a video of Round Baling.

Baling Hay "Square Bales"

We have two kinds of bales.  They are "square" and "round."  This video relates to square bales.

Baling Hay
I find this particularly interesting because I used to load bales.  In my day I had to pull each bale out of the baler shoot.  That was harder work but I did not have to dodge the flying bales.  I thought I had a large load if I put 100 bales on it.  This guy put 190 bales on that load.  I have created a video of this operation.

Raking Hay

Raking Hay
It was my job to rake hay.  Dad's first hay rake, of which I am aware, was converted from a horse drawn to tractor towed rake.  It had an extremely long tongue, presumably from the horse drawn service.  Later, he purchased a PTO, aka Power Take Off, unit.  We were pretty proud of it.  I have prepared a video of the process on Kieth's farm.  You will not have to use a Flash Player to view this.
