Slender Goldenrod

Solidago erecta
A walk through our meadows in August and September and even into October reveals lots of yellow blooms.  I once thought that they were all one variety, but since, have learned that we have many.  I seem to remember the number 16 in connection with this.  This one, Slender Goldenrod, still has most of its flying seeds.

Indian Grass

Indian Grass
Another of our Prairie Grasses, this Indian Grass inflorescence has lost most of it "flying"seeds.

Indian Grass
A closer look reveals that only a few are left.

Quartz with Gold?_Copper Inclusions

Quartz with Gold?, Copper Inclusions
I am not sure where I obtained this small piece of Milky Quartz.  It has inclusions which interest me quite a lot.  This image is at 2.9 X magnification.

Quartz with Gold?, Copper Inclusions
I achieve that kind of magnification by mounting my Mamya 50 mm lens backwards as a closeup filter on my Sigma 105 mm macro lens.

Brush-legged Wolf Spider

Brush-legged Wolf Spider
This is a left over from last season.  I found this shot and a very similar one (see below) in my "for blog" folder.

I like the neutral rendition (top) much better than the warm one (bottom)

Mountain Mint

Mountain Mint
I asked Jason, one day, what this was.  I had looked and looked to no avail.  He was working with the volunteers and there was noise and so I did not understand him.  I thought that he said "Mountain Man."  That was not helpful and I finally had to ask again, this time in quieter conditions.

I have not seen much Mountain Mint at Gorman, but that is probably because I have been unaware of it.  I had this happen with another plant (its name escapes me now) and I began seeing larger versions of it everywhere.

Reason for the Season

Nativity
I think that I should have shown this one last evening.  They went to Bethlehem to register.  I guess governments have required others than "drone" owners to register throughout history.  There was such a rush that lodging was unavailable.  Moving when you are pregnant must be difficult.  Anyway, Mary delivered her baby in the manger.  Merry Christmas, all.

Canada Goldenrod

Canada Goldenrod
I know this is Canada Goldenrod because the gall on the table came from its stem.  This one is inverted in color.

Canada Goldenrod Uninverted
This one had a branch which threw it out of balance.

Multiflora Rose

Rose Multiflora
If I remember correctly, we have Louis Bromfield to thank for this plant.  He may have imported it from France where it was used for fence rows.

It has beautiful flowers, white, and terrible stickers.  I try to avoid it when possible.

Rose Multiflora
I have found it interesting what colors are opposite which on the color wheel by inverting.

Color Wheel

It also makes an interesting print.  One might ask, "What is that?"  It is an inversion of the image at the top.  You might remember that in the film days, the negative looked like the bottom one.

Baccarat Crystal Tree

Baccarat Crystal Tree 12-21-2012

Since Christmas is one week away as I write, I thought that I could share some Christmas tree pictures.  I gave this tree to Carol as a gift previous to November of 2003.

Baccarat Crystal Tree 11-21-2003
I think it is time to revisit the photography of the tree.  I asked Carol and I know where it is.

2016 Larry's Images Calendar

2016 Larry's Images Calendar
This coming year's calendar is comprised of 13 pages.  You will have twelve 5 by 7 prints that you can frame.  It sells for $ 8.95.

I was unsure whether I would make a calendar this year but as the Christmas season approached, I decided that I wanted to, so here it is.  I don't think I have ever made an all flowers calendar.  I have noticed that many of you like my flower pictures.  You can see the flower pictures by going to:  Larry's Images Calendar Page.

I hope you enjoy this!

Dallisgrass

Dallisgrass
I noticed this plant because it had spikelets on one side of the stem.  It partially dried out before I got around to photographing it.  It is an introduced species here, and can become invasive according to Wikipedia.

Inversion

Tall Sunflower Inflorescence
I have been experimenting with "inverting" the color images.  This is like making it a color negative.  I provides an image that might be more compatible with current decorating tastes.

Winterberry
This experiment shows the red winterberry berries in bright turquoise.

Grumman 3E TBM Avenger

Grumman 3E TBM Avenger
This plane first saw combat after Pearl Harbor during the Battle of Midway in 1942.  It eventually became one of the best torpedo bombers of the war.  Manufactured by General Motors, it was initially developed for the Navy and Marines but later for naval and air stations around the world.  It flew, heavily modified into the 1960's.

Wild Carrot

Wild Carrot
This shape is not iconic at this time of year in the field.  Please note the seeds on the "table."  The shape of the umbels in the field is contracted into a ball.

Wild Carrot In The Field
The "ball" holds the seeds inside.  They eventually get out over the winter.

Wild Carrot
Eventually conditions dry out and the "ball" relaxes releasing the seeds.  The seeds would be likely to dry out quicker when encased in the "ball."  Maybe that precludes their rotting on the wet earth.

The Rattlesnake Master seed heads have long captivated my interest.  I have liked them as a silhouette using the sun but this one uses flash.

Little Bluestem

Little Bluestem
This started out as a project to show "seeds that fly in early November."  I am afraid that I ended up with more shots than I initially expected.

Little Bluestem
I initially collected this in the hayfield below Carrie, Andrew and Terry's Cabin.  I have thought it a beautiful plant for a long time and was surprised to find it in the field.

Little Bluestem
In the meadow, it turns an Indian red in late fall light.

Fanello Lucas Tree, Leaves Mostly Gone

Fanello Lucas Tree, Leaves Mostly Gone
As with most other trees, the leaves are all but gone at the present time.  This tree may live on into next season when the buds will open and new leaves appear.  It has been a pleasure to know it this autumn.  It's life is more enduring than most of ours.

I promised to make available "An Autumn In The Life Of A Tree" the video and HERE it is!

Of course, under the bridge lies this stream.  It has some nice sounds, not mention beauty.
