Gold or Copper

Quartz Gold Copper Inclusions
Geologically speaking, gold and copper occur in connection with quartz.  As I understand it, the gold of the earth and possibly copper too, sunk to the center because of its mass.  The gold that we find arrived on earth in a meteor and stayed near the crust.  It arrives at the surface via volcanic action, quartz, the second most common mineral on the earth, and water.  It is moved to the surface by the water.

I found this piece in a "silent auction" bucket from the Richland County Lithic and Lapidary show a couple years ago.  The image is highly magnified as you can see below.

Camera Setup
Carol asked me if we were rich after my discovery.  I told her, "Not so much!"

Lava Quartz

Lava Quartz
I look at these pieces under a hand lens to determine if there any interesting features.  This one, obviously, passed muster.

Lava Quartz
During two shoots, I found myself wanting to solve a mystery.  The opening drew my eye.  I wanted to throw light into it and view inside.  It turned that I was rewarded.

Lava Quartz
This is the perspective that worked.  I wondered if I could throw more light into it with a snoot, but  have not tried that.

Turkeytail Spore Printing

On this day we sometimes call "Turkey Day" I have chosen to discuss Turkeytail Fungus Spore printing.  Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.  I am thankful for the freedom to tell you these things.

Turkeytail Spore Printing
I collected a sample while photographing the Turkeytail fungus the other day.  I made my own wax paper bags into which to collect the sample.  I wanted to see if it was fruiting.

Turkeytail Spore Printing
I can't see why a non clear bowl would be any less effective in making a spore print.

Turkeytail Spore Print
I could see no spores on either color of paper.  I plan on doing my spore printing on a microscope slide after today, I am writing on 11/21/14.  The blank slides are scheduled to arrive today.  The papers can be placed under the slide for aid in viewing the spores and the slide can be viewed through the microscope.

Spore Printing

Making Spore Print Fly Agaric
I placed the cap on black and white paper.  If the spores are light colored, they will show up on the black paper and vice versa.

Making Spore Print Fly Agaric
The bowl is placed upside down over the mushroom to block any moving air which might disturb the spore print.

Fly Agaric Spore Print
An hour might be long enough but I left it there over night.  I really could not observe any spores.  I think that, in this case, the spores might come in the future.  I don't know if the cap will continue to mature once separated from the stem.  I plan on checking.

Fly Agaric Spore Print
This is a more closeup view.  I can see where some fluid from the cap landed on the white paper.  I expected to see the gills printed on the paper where the spores fell off.  I will keep you appraised.

Oak Maze-gill Fungi

Oak Maze-gill
I found this stick lying along one of the trails some time ago.  I think I know the dog who was playing with it.  I picked it up because of the fungi growing on it.

Oak Maze-gill Other Side
I suspect it is beyond fruiting.  I am trying to learn how one can determine when fruiting happens.  Fruiting, I am sure you know, is when the fungus is releasing spores.  I think this would be considered asexual reproduction.  The spores land in or on the media, the log or the earth, and grow into fungus.

Eulalia Grass Video

Eulalia Grass
I have thought Eulalia Grass beautiful for some time.  These plants grow by the garage.  To me this is the peak time of their beauty.

This is a video.  I created it for myself, not intending to share it until I read an article in Outdoor Photographer Magazine titled "The Concept" by Guy Tal.  I found it moving and was motivated to share it.  Mr. Tal's contention is that art is autobiographical.  What can be said about the art can also be said about the artist.  I have thought about this for five days and have decided I am willing to put his out there.  Sadly, many people including myself, don't always take time to consider what an art object might say, let alone what the artist might say.

Disclaimer:  I can assure you that the subject of Garrison Keillor's story was and is not what this video says.  I was listening to Prairie Home Companion on the radio while I made the VIDEO.

Turkeytail

Turkeytail Fungus
This fungus is growing on an American Elm log.  I think it is likely Turkeytail.

Turkeytail Fungus
It does not face all the same direction as False Turkeytail does.

Turkeytail Fungus
I don't think it is as attractive as the other fugus.

Please note the snow on the moss at the left.  I heard we had a winter blast headed our way and wanted to get to GNC again before everything was covered with snow.
