Orange and Red Dragonflies

Ruby Meadowhawk
I became familiar with the Ruby Meadowhawk in August of 2009.  Recently, I caught glimpses of an orange dragonfly.  I finally got a closer look.

White-faced Meadowhawk
I did not think it could be a Ruby Meadowhawk because it was orange.  I was unsure about the color of the face, too.  Then I saw one, an orange one, which had red areas on the abdomen.

Ruby Meadowhawk
I am wondering, now, if the immature form is orange and switches to red as it matures.  I am currently functioning with that theory.

Ruby Meadowhawk
I am waiting to hear from Judy Semrock on this issue and will pass on any information.

Eastern Pondhawk

Eastern Pondhawk Male
I have been seeing more of this species compared to the earlier season.  I see in the Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio that their flying time is June (the middle) to September (the middle).

Eastern Pondhawk Male
This appears to be an immature male.

This dragonfly is also known as the Common Pondhawk and the Green Jacket.

Few Butterflies

Red-spotted Purple
I can remember years when the butterflies were almost swarming at booming plants.  I have seen only this individual of this species.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
I have seen other individuals of this species of butterfly.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
As have I seen other individuals of this one.

Red Admiral
I do think the cool weather this summer has contributed to the lack of butterfly sightings.

I find that I long for the old "butterflies swarming" days.

Monarch Butterfly

Monarch Butterfly Female
I have experienced three opportunities to photograph a Monarch Female.  Jan Ferrall thinks this is the same female.  It is one more than I photographed last summer.  I have photographed at least three caterpillars.  I have seen some milkweed plants broken off.  I don't know if they were broken off to collect a caterpillar or not.  I find myself feeling defensive for these creatures.  I am not an official observer, but I think we might consider the Monarch Butterfly endangered at Gorman Nature Center.  I just observe the milkweed plants along my trail.  There could be plants elsewhere on the property.  I think that my observation would be indicating a trend, however.

Dead Dragonfly

Dead Dragonfly
I saw a set of dragonfly wings without the body on the trail and thought that it would be interesting to collect them for photographing.  I suppose the same thought might have motivated me to shoot the dead dragonfly.  I did not edit it to change colors or appearance.  I like the iridescent green eyes.  It might be a female Common Whitetail.

Queen Ann's Lace

Queen Ann's Lace
I love the blush of pink at the edges of some, not all, Queen Ann's Lace when blooming.

My noticing this attribute on this plant is what inspired me to make this shot.  I had in hand my insect setup with flash mounted.  I liked the dark background but decry the reflections on the "leaves" below.  A circular polarizer would, perhaps, cut that out but maybe not without polarizing filters on the flash also.

American Crow

American Crow
I seldom photograph the crow because they are usually so high forcing a sky background.  I discovered this dead tree the other morning which gives me, in my opinion, a much more suitable background.

American Crow
I find myself looking to this dead tree when it is still distant hoping to see a crow.  There is an approach which gives me cover.  I can get closer.  I look forward to more shots of crows in the future.
