The Big "H"

Apple Like Trees
I noticed this in the distance one morning as I walked from the parking lot into the meadow.  It was even more full of blooms that morning and I could see it at least 1/4 mile away.

It was near my trail so I walked near it and inspected it.  The uprights are separate plants.  The cross bar is made of two limbs meeting in the middle.  Their junction is somewhat apparent in this image but the morning I saw it it was not apparent.

Tiger Salamanders

Tiger Salamander
The Tiger Salamanders are almost 2" long now.  The rear appendages are growing as you can see.  It is at the base of the tail in this shot.

Tiger Salamander
The appendage has, on it, a foot with five digits as you can see.  Other than the size, this is the most significant change I noticed the last time I photographed them.

Wood Ducks

Wood Duck Pair
This pair of Wood Ducks excited me recently.  I had never seen any at Gorman on the water.

I learned that Wood Ducks are cavity nesters i.e. they nest in a cavity in a tree.

Cavity Nest Box
Then, I understood the nest box standing by the pond.

Wood Duck Female and Young
Soon afterward, I saw this site.

Wood Duck Female and Young
They stay near the shore line and don't leave it unless someone walks by.  They are camouflaged well and are difficult to see.

Wood Duck Female and Young
If you walk past them on the trail near the water, you probably will not see them unless they swim away from the shore.

Wood Duck Female and Young
"How does the little one get out of the nest and to the water," you might ask?  I am told that mother calls and  the little one jumps to join her in the water.  It can not fly until it grows feathers in the late season.

Post Lens Align Shooting

Buttercup

I came upon this yellow flower lit in a special way the other morning.  I felt compelled to photograph it because of the light.

Buttercup

My conventional way of shooting this was to manually focus (first picture).  I then decided to use auto focus (second picture).

Buttercup

I was reminded that I should use the lens I calibrated with Lens Align for the shot.  By the time I changed lenses the light had changed, unfortunately.  I am of the opinion that the third shot is sharper than either of the others.  I am afraid that is not quite apparent because of the changed light.

I used a Sigma 70-300 mm macro for these shots.  I don't consider it one of my sharpest lenses but I can still turn out sharp shots with it.  I have two of these, having replaced my first one when it needed repair.  I eventually had it repaired and still use it.  If Sigma, or anyone, made a Canon compatible 70-300 mm macro in a better quality, unchangeable aperture, I would buy one.  I would love an f/2.8 one!  It is still my go lens for insect photography because the working distance is greater than the 105 mm macro.  The insects are more relaxed at the greater working distance.  I know that I am rambling, but I want the try the Sigma 180 mm macro that came out recently for this application.

Bridge Update

Finishing Bridge 2
This is a shot of the finishing of Bridge 2.

GNC Bridge 3 Old
Please note that parts are being delivered to this site.

Bridge 3 Parts
At first, I thought they were going to repair the old bridge.  Recently, it became apparent that an entire replacement was planned.

New Bridge 3 Location
The new bridge 3 will be built just a few feet downstream from the old bridge.

Prison Door and Steps

Prison Door and Steps
I went to the prison with my friend Paul the other Saturday.  It was a day off for me.  We walked around looking for perspectives for a commission he has received for a painting.  We found so many wires, trees and geese that we decided there was no photograph there.

I captured this image with a Samsung Galaxy S4.  I have been noticing that the camera is like an DSLR with a Wide lens.  If you tilt it upwards the top of the image leans inward much more than a wide lens.  I find that I need to correct it in PS.

These steps are on the back, the West, side where they built the fake entrance for the film Shawshank Redemption.  I am unsure whether it was part of the changes made for filming.
