Stream Bed Series

Stream Bed 2155_9539_9541
I thought I would never again see sand in the stream bed with waves in the vicinity of bridge 2.  We had massive, for our stream, flash flooding last season.  All the sand washed out of the stream and onto the trail running parallel to and south of the stream.  It also flowed into the frog pond.   I was wrong, as you can see, it is reforming.

In the past I have produced these images as B&W prints.  I kind of like them in color, at least these.

I used a circular polarizing filter on these.  The dark detritus is in depressions below sand "mountains."  The detritus drops out of the current into these depressions after it passes over the mountain tops.  The current is running top left the bottom right.

Shadows on a Snowy Morning

Snowy Gorman Nature Center
March 30, 2014 dawned showing a good bit of snow from the night before.  I thought the snow on the pines between the visitors center and the pond beautiful.  I had hoped to show it with this shot.  The two things wrong here are:  1. The lens was too wide.  The trees seem too far away.  2.  The sun was at a point in the sky where I could not get the tripod shadow out of the shot.  I walked all around and could not eliminate it.

Snowy Gorman Nature Center
The best I could do was to stand in the shade of one of the many cedar trees growing in this meadow.

Driftwood Tree Roots

You may remember this scene.  I wanted to shoot it with the snow on the ground.  I was able, in this case, to place the camera in the shade of the tree.

GNC Bridge 3
The shadows worked best when traveling right to left at an angle.

Lava Quartz

Lava Quartz
For me, Photographing and looking are about the same.  I really enjoyed photographing this piece.

Lava Quartz
It had many interesting features.

Lava Quartz
By the time I arrived at this image, I was beginning to think about making a panorama.

The Adorama Macro Focusing Rail I use moves in two planes.  I often wish it moved in three plans but that is another discussion.  I decided that the features would be easy enough to line up.

Lava Quartz Panorama
Is it not beautiful?  I just love it.  It is so interesting!

Undermined Tree

Undermined Hickory Tree
Nothing is static in nature.  This tree, I think it is a hickory, has been undermined by the stream washing the soil from around its roots, down stream.  It is already leaning and will probably fall soon.  All it needs is lots of wind, more heavy rain or both.

Its trunk will be added to the the trash blocking the flow of the stream.  I have heard GNC criticized because fallen trees are not removed.  I think that the philosophy has been that they rot and contribute nutrients to growth of the current living trees and plants, not to mention insects, spiders, fungi, bacteria and lichen.  It looks untidy, but nature works that way.

Bridges 5 & 7

Bridge 5
This bridge is particularly difficult for me to cross with my cart because of the lack of a ramp on the right end.

Location of Bridge 7
A bridge used to cross the stream here and it washed out several years ago, going down stream toward Bridge 6.

Bridge 7?

I think this is the bridge which washed down stream. If it is, it is pointing directly at its old location.  It is actually located nearer bridge Bridge 6.  It is a mystery about which I can ponder as things develop.

Thin Ice

Thin Ice 2151_0026
I added another image to my "Thin Ice" series recently.  This time the ice was on the stream.  I shot from bridge 2.  You can see the far bank at the top.

March 25 Visit to Gorman

Trail Amidst Burned Old Growth.

The first thing I noticed was selective burning in the prairie environment.

Ice On The Pond
All the ice on the pond was thin ice which had formed the previous night.

I have been watching for the pond to thaw because thawing is one step closer to migrating ducks which I like to photograph.  I think that I must be allert.

Ice On The Trail
We still have ice on the trail from last winter.  There are a few places where the sun is blocked from prolonged access to the trail.  I am pleased that I can now get around it on safe dry trail.

Red-tailed Hawk
Crows chasing a hawk has been an enigma to me for several years.  I know they do.  I don't know if it is always a Red-tailed or not.  I don't know why they do it.  The crows usually number four or more.  It is a community effort.  I wonder if the hawk tries to feed on carrion designated as belonging to the crows.  Does anyone know why?
