Reflector/Lens Series IV

Citrine Quartz
I tried leaving the surface out of focus and I thought that helped but still only a portion the reflector/lens shows.

Same Camera Setup
I stopped to think that I am seeing it because I hold it in my hand and move it while looking.  Maybe a video would do it!

Rose Quartz Video

I think the video came as close as I could come.  I had to use a high ISO because I need a larger LED light which caused noise.  Sorry.  It you have suggestions, I would appreciate them.

Reflector/Lens Series III

Rose Quartz
I decided that I needed to add gentle surface reflections to the lighting of the reflector/lens but I do not feel I achieved the result I wanted.

Camera Setup
I tried to light the surface with the light on the right.

Reflector Series II

Rose Quartz
This is another effort.  I am not sure that you can tell the reflector/lens is internal.

Camera Setup
I tried to change the angles to show it but, as you can see, I did not work.

Internal Reflector Series

Rose Quartz
You have seen a lot of this rock lately.  It has one more feature which I want to display.  It is what I am calling an internal reflector/lens.  It has rays and is circular.  It must not be in one plane because it is difficult to light such that it displays completely.

Camera Setup
It must be viewed at a particular angle with light directed in a certain way.

I don't feel this one adequately demonstrates its reflectivity.  I wanted to show it because I wanted you to join me on a short journey trying to get the idea to you.

Citrine Quartz

Citrine Quartz
This piece of rock came with a fracture in the middle.  The fracture did not survive our handling.  You can see it in the upper left corner.    It is currently missing the other part.  It must have been, also, back when I made the "Rock Assortment" image.  It has other fractures, less fragile, than the first one which, I believe, add interest.

Citrine Quartz
The photography for this was nearly exactly like that used previously with the Rose Quartz.  Exposure Compensaton, ec, was - 1 and Flash Exposure Compensation, fec was - 3.  I used one 420ex slave flash.

Citrine Quartz
I have decided, I think, that trying to show internal features along side external features is difficult or impossible.  The image becomes too cluttered in most cases.

Surface of Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz
I set out to include the detail of the surface in these images.  I added flash to reveal the texture.  I liked flash placement best higher than even with the subject.

Rose Quartz
I experimented with exposure and flash compensation.  This is the one I like best.  It had ec = -4 and fec = +1

Sigma 105 mm Lens, full Kenko Extension Tube Set, Canon 500D

I did not have much of an idea how I wanted to achieve my goal.  I experimented varying the ec a stop at a time.  Later I varied the fec a stop at a time.  I came upon a result that I liked.

I also used the 3D function of Helicon Focus.  I don't have the Pro version so the images are imprinted but it gives the idea.

Light and Citrine Quartz

Quartz
This is the little broken piece from the rock assortment.  It came back to me broken like that.  It almost looks like rose quartz and may be.

I had an insight while making these images.  There are no other lights on in the room while except the Logan Light Box providing back light.  The whole thing is in Smtih-Victor LB-20 Light Box Tent.  It is white and is probably reflecting back enough light to give a sense of the "smooth" surface of the tumbled rock.  I think that my next step is to work with weak side light to give a sense of relief.

Quartz
I tried the 3D function on Helicon Focus but it did not render anything like the lock.  I became aware that this rock is nearly clear.  You can't tell that from these images.  We are seeing everything from the back to the front.  HF puts it in focus but does not give much of a sense of depth.  I can see the slight patina of the surface in places and some relief of the fractures.
