Sweetflag Spreadwing

Sweetflag Female Ovipositing
The Sweetflag Female in the image above is part of a tandem pair in the process of laying eggs.  I have seen the Slender Spreadwing Female, mentioned yesterday, doing the same thing while not in tandem but individually.

The tandem pairs catch your eye, of course, because they are a larger flying object.

I don't see how this fertilizes the eggs but in some way that happens and the eggs are laid, oviposited, into the stem.

Slender Spreadwing Female

Slender Spreadwing Female
I found this damselfly while searching for a preying mantis.  It was further from a vernal pool than I expected to find it.  It stayed still for me to photograph it.

Slender Spreadwing Female
It gave me the opportunity to move around for more angles and to document its appearance.

I have later discovered that it oviposits into leaves surrounding the vernal pool.  They then fall into the pool where they hatch.  I don't see how this insect can reproduce so far from the pool.

Later, I will show how they oviposit into the leaves of pool side plants.

Honey Bee on Tall Sunflower
The Tall Sunflowers are in bloom now and the bees love them.

Honey Bee
I liked this one better than the first one because of the blue in the lower left corner.  It somehow adds.

It is difficult for me to find blooms low enough to photograph.  They are 7 to 9 feet tall.

Detritus
This organization of detritus caught my attention the other day.  I shot it several ways.

Detritus
It is, simply, dead reeds and weeds in the bottom of the vernal pool.

Detritus
Liked this one the best where I turned off the flash and let the natural light do its magic.  It was an inspiration for me to do a project, a lot of which is already done.  I want to make prints, large ones, of things from this vernal pool.  More later.

Eggs

Eggs
Such a neat, organized deposition of eggs.  I have seen these in previous years but have yet to discover from where they come.  It is some insect, no doubt.  If anyone knows please contact me.

Comma Butterfly

Comma butterfly
I have seen more of these than in previous years.

Comma Butterfly
In a year with a dearth of orange butterflies, it is a rewarding reprieve.

Turtles and Frog

Turtles and Frog
I did not notice the frog at the time.  He/she is little soft because I focused on the large turtle.  The reflection in the water is the roof of the visitor's center.  I later moved so as to remove it from the image.  I came back to this one because the frog was sharper, though still not sharp, and I thought the roof reflection pointed my eye to the creatures on the float.
