More Insects

Blue Dasher
These shots may be worth your attention.  I don't know why I am captivated with the rear end of the Blue Dasher.  I liked this shot well enough to share.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
This is one of the few large butterflies that I have seen this season.  I can't say that the numbers are up to previous years.  They are, however; present.  They like the nectar from the Blazing Star.  This is an unusual or maybe not so unusual view of one.  They move around the raceme sipping its pleasures.

The Long-jawed Orb Weaver

Long-jawed Orb Weaver
Part of the joy of sitting by the vernal pool is watching for spiders, this one included.  It is difficult for me to get a good idea of how it looks because the jaws protrude far below the legs.  The eye, probably eyes, are above the legs.  It builds its web in the grass and reeds surrounding the pool.  I watched this one eat its web and eventually an insect caught in it.  At one point, I thought that it might be rebuilding its web.  I hope for more opportunities to photograph this arachnoid.

Ruby Meadowhawk

Ruby Meadowhawk
This dragonfly is difficult to miss.  It almost seems to following me around saying, "Photograph me!"  I see it in the "bottom" south of the covered bridge and other places like by the Frog Pond.

Ruby Meadowhawk
According to I Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio they fly until middle September.  They have only a few days or weeks left.  This would be an adult male.  The adult female, of which I have no shots, is more orange and smaller.  They are about 1.5 inches or less long.

Spring Peeper Frog

Spring Peeper
I seem to remember photographing a small frog which I thought to be a Spring Peeper.  The markings on the back were not exactly characteristic of the Spring Peeper.  I must have chosen not to show it because I cannot find it in the blog.

Spring Peeper
This fog is definitely a Spring Peeper with the characteristic "X" on its back.  It looks like it could be full of eggs.

Grasshopper Nymph

Grasshopper Nymph
The insect eventually looked like this on that first day.  The little beady eyes made me think that it is a nymph.  I wish I knew for sure.  The ID books don't have nymph pictures.

Grasshopper Nymph
It looks like it is sitting on top of some other insect in these shots.  At first, I thought that is was eating.  Now, I believe that the "insect" beneath is really exuvia, its former exoskeleton.

Grasshopper Nymph
The next day, it was still there.  Note the little beady eyes and the long horns.  I think that it might be some kind of grasshopper.  I did not get to go back to look at it on the third day.  I don't know if it will even be there on the fourth.

Please comment if you have information which might be helpful.

Moulting Grasshopper

Moulting Grasshopper
I rediscovered my joy in sitting on the edge of the vernal pool to watch the action the other day.  While sitting there, I saw this, unknown to me, creature.  It was a long shot from where I was sitting.  I could not move because the water was too deep and I did not want to scare the other creatures into hiding.

Moulting Grasshopper
I scan as I sit, looking for any activity.  Each time I returned to this site, I made another shot as I wandered what I was seeing.

Moulting Grasshopper
The creature looked different as time went on.  Tomorrow, I will show you how it looked the next day.

Turkeys and Fog

Wild Turkey Hens
I saw the turkey hens and their young, poults, again the other morning.  I have seen them three different mornings all of which were foggy.  Today was a foggy morning which would have been a good test for my theory that they come out or stay out longer in foggy weather.
