Sweet Briar

Sweet Briar Rose
I try to shoot things I think Carol will like.  She said this was beautiful but she did not like the background color.

It is a stack of three shots which were combined in Helicon Focus.  I used a rose holder because of the slight breeze.  I used a 42" diffuser held over my head as I made the captures.

Widow Skimmer

Widow Skimmer Immature Male
I really like that Larry and Judy's book, Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio, has many shots of the immature insects.  They change as they mature and identification can have you pulling your hair out without these shots.  The adults are easy to identify, for the most part.

Slender Spreadwing

Slender Spreadwing Female
I have been seeing what I believe to be slender spreadwing damselflies by the vernal pool north of the covered bridge.  I say, "believe to be...", because they land and leave their wings spread for a short time and then close them to the position shown above.

Slender Spreadwing
This one landed on the other side of the cattail leaf.  I could see nothing but its wings.  I quietly and slowly walked around the leaf so I could see the whole damselfly.  By then, the wings were closed to the position shown.

Rattlesnake Master, Prairie False Indigo, Prairie Dock

Rattlesnake Master, Prairie False Indigo, Prairie Dock
I saw this one day but the light was wrong.  I next day as I walked through I saw it again and this time the light was right.  I photographed it.  I am still unsure why I like it.

The small white blooms are False Prairie Indigo.  The large leaves are Prairie Dock which will bloom later with Astor like yellow blooms on a tall leafless stalk.  The tall light gray plant in the right top is the Rattlesnake Master which has yet to bloom.  There is also one in the lower left.  The darker leaves in the left middle are probably Tall Sunflower which also will bloom later.

Eastern Forktail

Eastern Forktail Eating
I have seen many of these damselflies this year.  This one is eating breakfast.

Eastern Forktail Eating
It seems that they eat flea like insects which are very prolific living on the pond lily leaves.

Eastern Pondhawk

Eastern Pondhawk Male
I have seen many of these medium sized dragonflies this year.

Eastern Pondhawk Female in Obelisk Position
They land in cluttered areas making photography difficult.

Azure Bluet

Azure Bluet Female
I found several of these blue damselflies along the trail beside the frog pond.  There were several so I set up and sat down.

Azure Bluet Female
They were fairly active but still in the mood to sit in the sun.  They exhibited the behavior of returning to the same perch.

Azure Bluet Female
There are several bluets in the book.
