Bladderwort

Bladderwort Blossom
This plant grows in the pond.  It has been becoming more common over the last several years.  I have been close to it this year as I sit photographing insects.  Its bloom has been compared to the snap dragon and orchid.  It does not implant roots in the pond bed as you might expect.  It instead has a bladder upon which it floats and which is the trap it uses to catch its food.  It is a carnivorous plant, feeding on water fleas, nematodes, mosquito larvae, fish fry and tadpoles.

You can read more about this most interesting plant at Wikipedia.

At6 Texan

SNJ-3 AT6 Texan
I have seen this WW II trainer at Airport Day for several years.  It was in various states of restoration over the years.  I was hoping to photograph it when it was finished but I heard, the other day, that it was sold.  It went to Arkansas or somewhere far away.  We will miss it this year.

Ebony Jewelwing

Ebony Jewelwing Female
Carol swears that she did not tell me these were her favorite.  Maybe I just imagined that she said that.

Ebony Jewelwing Male
They are among the largest damselflies.  They are easy to spot because of the contrast with the background.

Ebony Jewelwing
The males come in two color schemes, metallic and emerald green.  I have seen both at Gorman this season.  They seem to like the area by the covered bridge in the early morning.

Ebony Jewelwing Male
This one is having breakfast in the warm sun.

I read that the females submerge while ovipositing.

Airport Day is coming on Saturday, July 6 at Mansfield Lahm Airport.

I love airplanes and am looking forward to the day.  Hope to see you there!

Bumble Bee

Bumble Bee
It seems to me that the bumble bee will stop where ever it is when the air turns too cold or wet.  It will stay there until the next morning when the sun warms and/or dries it.

Bumble Bee
At the time it is dry enough and warm enough it will fly off to its appointed rounds.  I think that they can fly when it is too cool or wet but prefer not to.

I find it helpful to catch them at these times for a photograph.

Frog Eye

American Bullfrog
I wanted to show how to identify a bullfrog with this shot.  Usually, I will offset the subject toward a corner (the rule of thirds) but in this case, I feel the eye is strong enough to put in the center.  I think this would make a striking print.  I may make myself one.

These frogs will sit still in the pond very close to me while I am sitting in the pond.  This morning, I exited the pond within one foot of one and it did not move.  I am learning to be quiet in the pond as I am while I walk around the nature center.

Solar Panels Installed and Functional at Gorman

GNC Solar Panel Install
Cherrie Kent commented on Facebook the other day that the panels are installed and fully functional.  I am running about two to three weeks behind in my blog so I am moving these shots up in the que so that you can see them.

GNC Panel Install
I have all kinds of questions but have not asked because I am sure that others also have questions.  The staff would be inundated and unable to work.  Maybe they will schedule a one time presentation so that we all can find out at once.

GNC Panels Installed
I wondered if it is on the grid or if there are batteries.  I have seen no batteries go in.  If anyone knows and would care to share, please do so.

Blue Dasher

Blue Dasher Male
Dragonflies seem as large as birds after shooting damselflies.  I have been seeing this kind of  dragonfly for a week or more.  They love to perch on a broken reed as shown and will return to the same one multiple times.  If they leave, just keep watching for their return.  This one is probably a male.  I read that the females look more like the male as they age.  They have brown eyes and brown thorax.

Blue Dasher Female
They are everywhere at Gorman.

Blue Dasher Male
They frequently assume a position (shown above) called an "obelisk."

Slender Spreadwing

Slender Spreadwing
A few of the damselflies hold their wings in a spread position when they land.  This is one, obviously.

Slender Spreadwing
Interestingly, it closed its wings to the position shown after a few seconds.

I have been observing these near the back vernal pool across the bridge.  I have seen several spreadwings back there.

This is probably the longest damselfly at 1.75 - 1.85 inches for the male.
