Birthday Weekend

Chad and Megan
The birthday was on Sunday.  We celebrated after church.  Megan had been at a retreat for several days prior to that.  I don't know how they pulled it off.

Chad wanted to try out his iPhone 5.

Loudon Eicher
Mom, Megan, made each a birthday cake.  Loudon wanted the planet Jupiter for his cake.

There was also a soccer game which all attended.

The hands in front of his face caused exposure problems but we must have shots like this!

Lucas Eicher
I liked the orange cake.  It was the sun.

Another exposure problem.

Grandma Nana with Lucas and Loudon
Grandma Nana and Grandpa Stevie came for the festivities.

Weekend Visit

Lexy Yoha
She is no longer a baby Buckeye.  She is a senior and she visited us this past weekend.  It was nice to see her and hear about her life.

Please tell Jake to get more catches!

Tall Sunflower

Tall Sunflower
It raises is face toward the morning sun.  The sun kisses its rays and makes it warm.  It is visited by many of summer's creatures, to be discussed in a later blog.

Tall Sunflower
The tall sunflower seems to be moving through its stages much more quickly than the Prairie Dock did.  I think that it is beautiful even without the yellow rays.

The clouds were moving behind the plant and in front of the sun behind lighting it.  What an interesting light show!  Check out the video, Tall Sunflower Timelapse.

Prairie Dock
The bright yellow rays have long gone.  It wraps like this in the next stage.

Prairie Dock
Those fall off and you can view the forming seeds.

Prairie Dock
Eventually the seeds begin to fall off.

Prairie Dock
As the seed fall off, you note the little round pad underneath.

The seeds are in the little green "bulb" underneath.  When they are gone there is not much left.

Aster Plant

Maryland Golden-aster
I accidentally noticed this plant the other day.  This was definitely an accident since it does not draw attention to itself during the "yellow period", my words.  You have to look closely to note that the blooms are different from the Canada goldenrod and others.

It has oval shaped leaves.

Maryland Golden-aster
The leaves are alternate on the hairy stem.

Maryland Golden-aster
You must look very closely to note that the edges of the leaves are toothed.  I kind of think that I decided that they were not toothed.  What do you think?

Maryland Golden-aster
From the point where the leaf connects to the stem two flower-lets or flowers emerge.

Did I say that I am unsure about the ID of this plant?  I have found this plant in only two locations at Gorman.

Maryland Golden-aster
It is a quite beautiful plant.  It is unique in the shape of its leaves and the two flowers emerging from each leaf base.  Any comments on the ID of this plant would be welcomed.

The Colors of Gorman Nature Center

Gorman Nature Center
I am planning a new slide show entitled "The Colors of Gorman."  One of the colors simply must be yellow.  We are in the yellow period, my name for it, currently.  The goldenrod, shown in the lower right, is blooming profusely.  The prairie dock is finished and the tall sunflower, shone in the mid-left, is at its height of color.

Gorman Nature Center
We have lots and lots of goldenrod, to my knowledge all yellow.  I was trying to show that in this shot.  I thought that the bird box needed to be lit in this shot because it was in the shade of a tree, not shown.

Gorman Nature Center
I set up a remote flash on a tripod in front of the box and behind the goldenrod, out of sight.  At first, my camera master would not make it flash.  I began raising the flash one crank at a time until the camera would activate it.  I thought the result better but much too bright.

Gorman Nature Center
I decided to dial down the flash intensity.  I finally settled on Flash Exposure Compensation, FEC, -1 1/2.  The box is lit just enough to make it a unified part of the lighting of this shot
