Mayapple

Mayapple

I recently photographed this young mayapple plant.  I thought of my photographer friend, Michael Jarosick, who has such a sensitive eye for light.  I set up the shot using a 42 inch Stroboframe diffuser.

Camera Setup
I am becoming aware that the light changes from second to second during a shoot and that I need to be aware of it as the camera is when set on auto ISO.  We had clouds that morning moving across the sky.  When I viewed my shots later on the computer, I noticed that I liked the one where the clouds softened the light even more than the diffuser by itself did.

Mayapple
This, to me, was my better shot from that shoot.

Four Leaf Clover

Four-leafed Clover
I took Carol for a walk yesterday afternoon.  It was so warm and sunny.  We did not mind the wind at all.  I showed her the woodpecker nest.  She went because I promised not to take my cameras.  On the way back I remembered this plant.  She picked one to keep.  I also commented on the wild flowers growing along the path.  I certainly enjoyed walking with her and holding her hand.

I apologize that my blog has not posted.  Blog Spot scheduled posting has stopped working and I have not had time to manually post each day.  I will try to manually post until it is fixed.

Video Side Advantage

Cardinal Bird
While sitting behind the video camera waiting for action, I have the opportunity to create still images with another camera.  When photographing the cardinal, I value the crest raised as it is in this shot.

Water Lilies

Water Lilies
I liked the color of the new water lily leaves.  The wind created tiny waves and made the leaves difficult to photograph.  I finally made the capture that pleased me.  As an after thought, I decided to capture video.  I think that the video conveys more of the charm of the scene.  What do you think?

Red-bellied Woodpeckers

Red-bellied Woodpecker Male
I have learned much since, several years ago, I first noticed the call of this bird (hear it later on the video).  It took me a year to spot the bird.  My first shot of it was from far away and the wrong angle.  Since then I have become more aware of it and recently have filmed its activities at a nest site.  I used my Canon 7D to make these videos.

Movie Setup
The microphone is a Rode SVM and records high quality sound.  The problem here is that its best sound needs to come from 15 to 20 feet and the woodpeckers are a lot farther away.

It is interesting to watch them at the nest.  Only one goes in at a time.  The male my spend more time there than the female.  If not it is equal time.  I have observed mating behavior (yet to be filmed but I have stills).  I am unsure at the present whether the eggs are already laid, hatched or not.  The birds exhibit a lot of activity.  I do not hear young begging so I assume that they are  not yet hatched.  The mating behavior, in my opinion, had the wrong bird on top so I wonder if it was just playfulness.  At any rate, it is interesting to observe and learn.  Please check out the video.  It is as the bottom of the page.
