Deformed Rock

Deformed Rock
I found this rock while looking through the bucket of rocks.  I was immediately drawn to it.  The curved lines are mesmerizing.  I started wondering how it was made.  I would have expected to see the lines straight like a tootsie roll first and then be bent or folded by some strong force.  I looked in my field guides for an ID.  It appears to be Chalcedony, a derivative of quartz.  Heat made it pliable like the tootsie roll and then the force bent it.  If the tootsie roll were in the freezer before the force was applied, it might break instead of bend. The freezer would be like the rock being on the surface of the earth.  The heat, of course, came from down inside the earth.  The force, no doubt, came from there also.

While looking into this, I found a marvelous resource on the web.  It is at kids.gov.  It is called The Dynamic Earth.  It is published by The Smithsonian Institute and it relates to this and other issues.

Deformed Rock
These rocks would be beautiful as they come out of the tumbler!  The thing that I am noticing for photography is that I would almost rather they retain the sharp corners and edges.  They are more interesting.  They don't have the shiny surface which is an added difficulty when photographing them.

Little Bluestem

Little Bluestem Grass
I have been playing around with video for almost a year now.  I received some accessories for my camera for Christmas which might help me improve my work.  This is a video showing how the appearance of the grass changes as the camera pans.  My thought is that it is the way the light hits it.  That is the way I explain it in the video but I am open to other explanations.  If you have one, please share!

Watch the video.

GNC Nature Sounds

Sony PCM D50 Linear Recorder
I released a CD over the holidays.  I recorded it on the above recorder at Gorman.  It was recorded last fall.  It is now available at Amazon.com.  You can hear samples of the tracks there and at www.larrysimages.com.  I fulfill the CD orders from my office.  The MP3 downloads are fulfilled there at Amazon.  I would like your reaction.  I consider it "relaxation" music.  Two of my grandsons listen while going to sleep at night.  My friend, David, likes to listen while he reads.  It serves best, in my opinion, as background music.

Gorman Nature Center is a suburban interface between humans and nature.  As such, there are some road sounds, though I try to eliminate them as much as possible.  I made a recording for a future album the other day which ended with a gun shot.  Muzzle Loader Deer Season was in.  I am unsure whether I like it or not.  It is definitely Gorman Nature Center, though.  I have seen people in camouflage clothing walking down the trail trying to scare the deer out of the protection of the Nature Center.

Let me know what you think even if you don't buy it.  Thanks for your help.

Rocks

Deformed Rock
This is another "deformed" rock similar to the ones I have mentioned earlier.  Some strong force bent this almost to the point of breaking.  I love the colors!

Geode
This rock was formed with an opening inside in which the crystals formed.  What interesting lines!

This Saturday, January, 14, 2012, the Crawford Park District is hosting the Rock and Fossil Show at Lowe-Volk Nature Center near Crestline.  I have attended this show in previous years and highly recommend it if you are into rocks.  Just Google "Lowe-Volk" for directions to the nature center.  The time is 12:00 noon until 3:00 PM.

Enargite

Enargite
I shot this one at 1080p.  I had not tried the large video files on my camera.  Chad and Megan let me view it on their large TV.  It filled the screen, looked good, and sounded good.  Megan liked the sound of flowing water.

I mounted the rock on a lazy Suzann and rotated it with my electric drill.  The shakiness is caused by my hand-holding the drill.  The sound is some I recorded at the stream at Gorman.

Check it out!  There is a Windows Media Player and iPhone 4 version.   The video is at the bottom of the page.  Let me know what you think.

Enargite 2

Enargite
I have learned that I must personally inspect the rocks I buy for the tumbler.  I just can not seem to get enough of this one.  I don't know why.  The "bedding" rock looks so common.  Then there is this metallic flat surface with the "boxes" on it.  How exciting!
engarite
I wanted to see it at all angles.  Remember that the flat part is maybe 1/2 inch long.

Enargite
The bedding rock does have little green spots when you look closely.  I don't know if that might be copper too.

Enargite
We must see more of this rock!  Tomorrow I will show you a video of it, complete with sound.

Enargite

Enargite
Carol asked my why I was spending so much time photographing the enargite.  I thought about it for a day and realized that as I photograph nature, I seldom see flat surfaces, straight lines, or square corners.  I think that is why this stands out to me.

I made some of these images during the holidays but fell behind processing them.  I hope that you like seeing them.

Lichen

Foliose Lichen
What a mild season so far!  The lichen looks quite healthy and seems quite colorful since the green plants are brown.  The light was hitting this log the other morning and I liked the way it looked.  I believe this to be xanthoparmelia lavicola Foliose Lichen.

I liked the color shown by the fruiting bodies of the moss on top of the log.  Notice how the lichen is encircling the branch in the lower left.
