Tall Ironweed

Tall Ironweed
I really find the Tall Ironweed beautiful in the autumn when it is "ripe."  The seeds are attached to little parachutes like milkweed but on a much smaller scale.  I like to watch them as the wind and weather disperses them.  The background for this shot is Short Bluestem grass.  I also like its color in the fall.  I have been watching and waiting for its color change and rejoice at its arrival.  I hope that you like it too.

Gorman Nature Center Pond

Gorman Nature Center Pond
I wanted to try this shot before the leaves changed but missed their peak.  I used a Sigma 10 - 20 mm lens, f/32, 1/15".  I had recently read something that reminded me to get close to the foreground and, when you think that you are close, get closer.  I realized that I had not been getting that close.  A wide angle lens has much DOF, depth-of-field.  So does f/32.  I think that this shot demonstrates that.  I kind of think that I need less sky and more of the ground, though.

Lavicola Lichen

Lavicola Lichen
The lichen seems to be growing better now that fall has arrived with its cooler days and abundant rains.  You probably know that lichen is a symbiotic (mutually helpful) relationship between moss and fungus.  I love the green color of this one.  I love the contrasting color that the maple leaf brings to this composition.  It brings out those tones in the bark and holds the whole thing together.

New England Aster

New England Aster
I have been enjoying these plants in bloom for several weeks.  They seem to hang on like the chrysanthemum does in the fall.  The grasses have turned brown and make a pleasing background for this shot.  I used Helicon Focus software to get ample DOF (depth of field).  I used f/8 so that even the shot focused to the rear of the plant would not make the grass sharp.

Narrow-leaved Willow Herb

Narrow-leaved Willow Herb
I first noticed this plant last year about this time.  The seeds were all gone then and the light fell on the empty seed pod so as to attracted my attention.  I photographed it then not knowing what it was.  I have since learned its name with the help of Steve McKee.

I realized yesterday morning that I had noticed this plant growing near the front pond several years ago.  I thought that the blooms were beautiful though small and difficult to photograph.  I have shown you close up shots of them this year.  I hope you enjoyed them.

GNC Nature Sounds Album

Album Cover
The album is done.  We are finding that it is good relaxation listening.  It puts little kids to sleep and old people too.  Do not listen while driving!

I am planning on selling this for $9.00 plus tax and shipping in CD form.  The download will cost $ 0.89 when I figure out how to do it.  The download will be MP3.

I used a Sony PCM-50D recorder for these tracks.  I hope that you like it as much as I do.  There are samples of each track at my website.

I think that I may have enough recordings for an album of lake sounds when I have time.  I am also working on the sequel to this album.

I keep feeling grateful for each time I can visit GNC.  I try to take home with me all that I can of the place.  I try to be aware of the sounds around me and the light and objects/animals around me too.  I know that there may come a time at which I will be unable to go.  I will enjoy looking at the pictures and listening to the sounds, then.

Fall Color at Gorman Nature Center

Gorman Nature Center
I have truly enjoyed the fall color this year.  I did not travel anywhere but to Gorman.  I have made it my business to capture the beauty there.  I sincerely love it.

Gorman Nature Center
I keep thinking that the fine weather will eventually turn into nasty weather.  As I grow older, I find that I am less likely to go out into it.

I feel the same way about the sounds at Gorman.  I have been making a CD of the sounds there.  I would like to tell you about it at a later time.
