Chickory

Common Chickory
You will see these growing along the road side this time of year.  I have long thought they are beautiful.  Much of the time I don't stop to look at it.  Maybe it is because it is  not large, about one inch.  Maybe I consider it a weed.

According to Wikipedia, the root can be baked and ground for use as a coffee substitute or additive.

I enjoyed taking time to look at it again when I made this image.  I used a "rose holder" to stabilize it.  I then made three images for ample depth-of-field and combined them in Helicon Focus software.

Caterpillar?

I think this might be a caterpillar.  The head end looks to me like a caterpillar.  The posterior end looks like the parts are not as large as I would expect.  It is eating the leaf of a common milk weed.  I found it while looking for the monarch caterpillar.  From my observation of the the monarch caterpillar, I have noticed that they always look like a monarch caterpillar, just smaller.  Does anyone have an idea about this?
