Help!

Frog Pond Dam
We have a pond leaking at Gorman Nature Center.  Merrill Tawse says there is a tile ditch which should have been removed and was not.  We need a backhoe to dig it out and seal the leak.  That would make the frogs very happy!  If you know anyone who can help, call the nature center at 419-884-FROG or email me.  (see below)

Bullfrog

Bullfrog
These frogs can be heard on some days and not on others.  I don't know if the reason is the time of day that I am there or the weather or what.  They can be distinguished from the Green Frog visually by the absence of the dorsolateral ridge.  This ridge appears as a skin fold running from behind the typmanium (ear) down each side of the back.  The Bullfrog does not exhibit this ridge.  They also emit a distinctive sound.  I have never observed them making that sound.  I would like a shot of one in the process.  I am learning to imitate their sound.  I have no recordings to share of myself but I do have one of a Bullfrog

Gray Catbird

Gray Catbird
I started out erroneously thinking that the sound of the Catbird came from a Mocking Bird until I learned that we do not have Mocking Birds at Gorman.  The Catbird has a distinctive call and is easy to recognize.  I have noticed, also, that they sing another song.  I have wanted to photograph and record that so that I know that it came from the bird in the photograph.  I finally accomplished that goal recently.  I wonder if the song has something to do with mating.

Recording of this Catbird.

Water Droplet

Water Droplet
I was watching spiders, and dragonflies, at the vernal pool the other morning and noticed this water droplet.  It looked perfectly round.  You can see that it was functioning as a lens.  You can see the horizon, the sun, some plants and the reflections from my flashes.  Also notice that things are upside down.  Afterwards, I decided I would like a closer closeup.  I was going through the setup and was almost finished.  I pulled away another grass stem to clear the shot and it accidentally nudged the plant holding the droplet.  Needless to say, the drop fell and I again changed setups.

A Spider

Thin-legged Wolf Spider
I am a little afraid to show this spider because of the error in identification of the last spider.  It was not a large spider.  I have a new field guide from ODNR for spiders.  This is what I think it was.  The Long-jawed Orb Weavers are gone after the storms we had several weeks back.  These spiders have replaced them at the edge of the vernal pool.  It is interesting to watch them work.  They can rush out onto their web and quickly bind any insect caught.

Lazy Days of Summer!

Blue Dasher Dragonfly
When the weather is hot, humid and the sun is bright, these insects are busily flying around the ponds and vernal pools.  I love watching them.  Sometimes they land and I can get a shot.  Sometimes they hover and I can get a shot.

Slaty Skimmer Dragonfly
The Pickerel Weed in the pond is in bloom, currently.  It makes a beautiful perch for them.

Blue Dasher
If you don't mind sweating, go to the nearest pond or vernal pool and sit quietly for a while.  You will be amazed at all the activity!

More bees!

Honey Bee
The Canadian thistles were blooming and the bees were very active.  I not only photographed them but recorded them.  I attached my recorder to the end of my mono-pod, extended it all the way, and used it as a boom.  The recorder does not have a telephoto mic. It must be close.

Bumble Bee
I, sometimes, put the sound files files on my website for you to hear.  More often, I use them in my videos.

This is a recording of a bumble bee flying from left to right.
