Blue Flag Iris

Blue Flag Iris
I think that the Blue Flag Irises came out a little early this year, maybe because of the recent hot weather.  They are as beautiful, as ever!  I enjoy photographing them.  I have noticed the the background is important to a successful image.  This one was captured using flash.

Blue Flag Iris

On a cloudy day, the light is soft and it makes an image with saturated colors.

Blue Flag Iris
This is my favorite so far!  The lens was cold from being in the basement.  When I took it out, if fogged up and provided a soft focus type image.  I showed this one to my wife, Carol.  She said that it is beautiful but the colors are wrong for her decorating scheme.  I don't understand!  I may make a print for my office.  Here, the iris is in the shade and the sun is on the pond behind.

Blue Flag Iris

This is a shot from June, 2008.  When Carol saw this one, she wanted a print immediately.  In this one, the iris is in the sun and the pond, behind, is in the shade.  This one has sold often so others must see it as Carol does!

Pitch Pine

Pitch Pine
I noticed these "cute" little pine cones the other day and photographed them.  We have several of these trees at Gorman Nature Center.  They are pollinating and you can see the pollen thick in the air.  It lands on your car if you park near the tree.  It lands on camera lenses, too!  When the wind blows it looks like a cloud of smoke.

Damselflies are here!

Northern Bluet
I love sitting beside the vernal pool to watch the life therein.  I, of course, photograph as much as I can.  With the recent hot weather, many insects have been active.  I captured this image of a Northern Bluet ovipositing.  That means more bluets for later.

I photograph to see.

Long-jawed Orb Weaver
I understand that there are many species of this spider.  I have never caught one but I wondered how it got its name.  The other day I made this image.  When I take it home to the computer, part of my work flow is to view it at 100%, meaning that I look at the individual pixels.  I am looking first of all for sharpness.
Long-jawed Orb Weaver
This is section of the above shot inverted.  I just realized that I may be throwing you a curve by inverting it.  Sorry!  I look for the eyes to see if they are sharply focused.  When doing so, I can also look at the rest of the spider.  I have another shot, below, which shows a good view of the long jaws.  Incidentally, it looks to me like the web filaments come from the head end of the spider.

Long-jawed Orb Weaver
You can see what I suppose are the long jaws in this shot.

Long-jawed Orb Weaver
This is the view at 100%.  He/she does not have a very pretty face but then what spider does?

Photography Workshop

Sandusky Bay Bridge
I recently drove to Kellys Island, Ohio for a photography workshop lead by David Fitzsimmons and Art Weber.  It was an enjoyable experience.  We had beautiful weather and some very zealous photographers with whom to work.  I made my work into a video for your enjoyment.  The video for Windows Media Player is located here.  The video for Apple Quick Time is located here.  Comments are welcome as always.
