Meadow Habitat

Gorman Nature Center Meadow
I have noticed, over the years, that a meadow or even a farm field, near a forest gets smaller and smaller as the trees encroach on the the land.  The same is true a Gorman Nature Center.  The forest would naturally take over the Meadow Habitat.  The process is called reversion.  Once in several years, it is necessary to "bush hog" the meadow to push back the woody plants in order for us to continue to have a meadow habitat.  The bush hog trimmed this portion of our meadow this spring.

Bird Sounds

Female Red-winged Blackbird
She has a nest in the grass beside the pond.  She does not like people walking on the trail beside the pond.  She is very vociferous about it.  Listen to her ranting.

Catbird
The catbird usually sounds a little like a cat.  I recently observed one singing like a songbird.  I don't know whether it is some sort of mating call or it was just imitating another bird.  I liked its sound.

The Wolf Spider

Wolf Spider
I really like to photograph insects of which this is not one.  I was looking for a chance to set up my camera to shoot insects when I saw this spider near the vernal pool.  I use two flashes mounted near the front of my lens to give a balanced light with soft shadows.  I mix ambient light with my flash.

Wolf Spider
I love sitting by the side of the pond or vernal pool to watch all the activity.  There is much to see.  I am not in a hurry.  Time is not a factor.

clouds 1575_5033

clouds 1575_5033
I like watching the clouds!  I think that they make dramatic subjects.  The other day I was driving over to my son's house and noticed the clouds.  I drove down by the lake where I could get a clear view and captured some images.  I liked this one best of all.

Insects are coming!

Mosquito Pupa
I brought these creatures home one rainy day.  There was so much rain that the water was very cloudy.  I let it set over night so that I could photograph them.  They travel in a vertical fashion like a sea horse.  You can see that behavior in this video titled Mosquito Pupa.  I am using Freshwater Invertebrates by J. Reese Voshell, Jr. for this identification.  I checked Wikipedia and their description of the pupa was what appears to me to be the larva.  I don't think that I am an expert.  I am just trying to learn. I wonder if some of the creatures here are changing stages.  Hope you enjoy the video.

Honeysuckle!

Honeysuckle
I wished for a smell recorder!  Maybe I should invent one.  This is the story of my developing awareness of these blooms.  I try to convey my experience but, alas, it is still based on your past experience with such a plant.

This video "short" is a record of my experience both visually, and aurally.  Consider it a bouquet for you.
I hope that it makes your day just a little better!

A May Bouquet for you!

Flowering Dogwood
One of the beauties of video, I am discovering, is that I can video a plant when the wind is blowing.  The wind is blowing quite often at Gorman Nature Center and I like the option.  This is one where the wind is blowing, but I was also able to capture a still image.  I hope you enjoy the video.  Consider it a video/audio bouquet.  I hope it makes your day just a little better!

Please note that I am including files for the iPhone in addition to the Android.  The iPhone link is Quick Time.
