A new Sunflower!

Jerusalem Artichoke
"Sunflower Season" was the name of the wildflower walk lead by Steve McKee at Gorman Nature Center.  I wanted to go because I love the sunflowers.  I love to photograph them and the insects which visit them.  There is much to learn about the plants themselves.  Steve pointed out that there are two kinds of florets in the "flower".  There are the disc florets in the center and the ray florets (we would call them petals) around the outside.  I would have said, had you asked me, that it was a Tall Sunflower plant.  I did not even think until after the walk, that Steve not talked about Tall Sunflower.  I watched on my walk this morning and saw no Jerusalem Artichoke plants on "my" trail.  They were all Tall Sunflower.  That is probably why I had not noticed them.  Sometimes it is a good idea to try new things like a different route.

You can see the ray florets, yellow, in back ground.  The disc florets are grouped together.

Steve pointed out that there are many other plants with similar types of flowers.  He have us a list.  If you are interested, I would be glad to e-mail you a copy.   larry@larrysimages.com

Clouded Sulfur Butterfly
I remember the opposite colors on the color wheel by association.  I have picked two schools and a season which help me remember.  I felt this one in my gut as I shot it.  I did not know why until I had time to think about the color wheel.  I have been noticing many of these butterflies but have been unable to get a shot.  The other day, this insect was most cooperative.  I read that they are some of the most common butterflies we have in Ohio.  I don't know if interior decorators will go for this, I think they are missing something if they don't.
